What is Mrigshira Nakshatra?
In the previous blogs, we have seen the meaning of Nakshatra and the first four Nakshatras, Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, and Rohini. In this blog, we shall talk about the Mrigshira Nakshatra, its significance, and how it impacts astrology.
About Mrishira Nakshatra
Mrigshira Nakshatra is the fifth Nakshatra in the Lunar mansion. We already know that when the Earth moves around the Sun in an orbit and the Moon moves around the Earth in an orbit, there are different stages and different shapes of the Moon from one specific location only. There are 28 shapes that the Moon takes and it repeats similarly for all the 12 Months thus, each lunar mansion represents one Nakshatra, and the fifth one in the line is Mrigshira.
Mrigshira is a spoiled word for Mrigshirsh or the head of the animal, dear. Also known as The Orion, there is a mention of Mrigshira Nakshatra in the Surya Siddhanta or the text written in the 5 century BC describing the Mrigshira Nakshatra, the calculations that are used to make estimations about the heavenly bodies, their movements, appearance, disappearance, their facts, and all other details to put them in writing with logic and put an end to the vast mysteries of space unknown.
Represented by the symbol of a deer’s head, as is clear with the name as well, Mrigshira Nakshatra is mainly interchangeable with Margsheersha Nakshatra. The reason is, Margasheersha in Sanskrit means the one who leads and Mrighsheersh also means the top of the deer. This is also why Mrigshira Nakshatra or Margasheersha Nakshatra leads the way to the year by being one of the first Nakshatras to be seen on a Vedic New Year so that the entire year can only lead to new heights of glory.
In Malayalam, Mrigshira Nakshatra is called Makayeeram or the leader from the front or the one that is the leader and is on the top also.

It is said that the Chandra (Moon), or the God of calmness and attraction, holds a Kalash (a copper vessel that holds water). This Kalash contains the key to immortality, a liquid, also called Amrit (a liquid which provides immortality to anyone who drinks it). Chandra was given this right after it was accepted by Lord Shiva to be placed upon his head.
We all know about the Samudra Manthan or the ordeal of the ocean. The entire act was done to procure the nectar liquid of immortality so that the Devas (the Gods and the good side) as well as the Asuras (the devils or the bad side) can drink it and become immortal. The Gods knew that if the entire Earth did not unite, no one would be able to extract the nectar and thus everyone decided to work hard on it.
After the nectar was extracted, the Devas tried to dupe the Asuras and take all the nectar for themselves so that victory over evil was obtained. They were mildly successful but Rahu and Ketu got lucky as they were successful in camouflaging their reality and disguising themselves as the Devas to sip the nectar.
After this also, there was a lot of nectar left and the Devas wanted to preserve it forever at the best location possible so that only the most deserving could reach it when they deserved it.
But who better than Lord Shiva, whose beginning and end were not defined, who was the epitome of justice to the people, and who was the one whom everyone respected, from the living to the dead? So everyone collectively decided to let Mahadeva handle the nectar of immortality and since Lord Shiva had Chandra at the top of his head, he gave the responsibility of taking care of the nectar to the Moon.
Coincidentally, Chandra (Moon) rides a chariot and there are very attractive horses mounted on his chariot that too look as beautiful as deer thus, Mrigshira Nakshatra is commanded by Chandra or Moon God.
