About Rohini Nakshatra

Up until now, we have understood the concept of the Lunar Mansion and how the Moon’s motion around the Earth’s orbit and the Earth’s orbit around the Sun makes the Moon’s appearance different on each day of the Lunar cycle making for 28 Nakshatras.

There also is another story that King Daksha, the father of Goddess Parvati (Wife of Lord Shiva), had 27 daughters from different wives and all these daughters were the origin of each Nakshatra of the Moon (Chandra) that Lord Shiva owns on his head in its half Moon shape or the first Nakshatra stage.

Rohini was the fourth wife of Chandra and thus she was known as the fourth Nakshatra. Rohini in Sanskrit means The Red Goddess and thus, the orangish-red star Aldebaran is very closely associated with Rohini Nakshatra.

There are multiple opinions on the shape of Rohini constellation wherein people have different theories about the shape saying it looks like a cart. Some others believe that Rohini Nakshatra looks like a chariot. Many others have an opinion that Rohini Nakshatra resembles a temple and yet other group debates that Rohini Nakshatra looks more like a Banyan Tree. Amongst all these debates, the Rohini Nakshatra still stands to be one of the most common debatable topics due to the multiple opinions of multiple people on multiple grounds.

Rohini Nakshatra is considered to bless the people born in it with immense good looks and attraction. Majorly, these people have something in them making them very well-groomed, very classy, and also attractive. The reason is associated with Chandra’s special affection with Rohini. The other wives of Chandra, or the 26 sisters of Rohini hated this special attention to Rohini due to her outstanding appearance, and thus, Daksha had warned Chandra also to give importance to others equally. Still, Chandra could not remove his eyes off Rohini and Daksha gave Chandra a curse to have leprosy wherein his glow would fade forever.

It was on this fourth day that Chandra realized that he was losing his charm and he went to Lord Brahma, the ruling God of Rohini for a solution. Lord Brahma knew that only Lord Shiva could help in this and thus he sent Chandra to talk to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva was in meditation and Lord Ganesha overheard the issue Chandra was facing so he suggested Chandra worship Lord Shiva till he opened his eyes.

When Lord Shiva finally was impressed with Chandra’s prayers, he finally opened his eyes and felt bad for Chandra.

Since Lord Shiva was married to Goddess Parvati, the only daughter of King Daksha who did not marry Chandra, thus Lord Shiva and Chandra were brother-in-laws to each other.

This was why Lord Shiva felt bad for Chandra and he said that even though Chnadra’s curse could not be taken back completely, Shiva would carry Chandra on him and even if Chandra lost all his glow within fourteen days, he would get the same back also in the next cycle of fourteen days, making a cycle of no moon to full moon to no moon in 28 days and two days of one full moon day and one no moon day.

Since it was Lord Ganesha who helped Chandra expedite this process, day four or Chaturthi of each cycle came to be known as Ganesha Chaturthi, and worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day makes a person free of any type of curse a person gains knowingly or unknowingly due to a mistake done sometime in the past.
