The last day of Navratri is called the Dusshera. This day is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil. Goddess Durga played the good to win over the evil Mahishsura who created threat to the Gods and Goddesses as well as common inhabitants of Earth misusing his powers. He made living on Earth difficult and so the Gods had to find a way to defeat this devil. They asked for Goddess Durga's help because Mahishasura had a boon which prevented his death by hands of any man. He took the same for granted forgetting completely that the boon did not cover safety from women. This is how Goddess Durga chased and laid a trap for Mahishasura and finally she was able to bait him to walk right into the trap laid and eventually gotten himself killed. In this act, he evaded a lot of powerful Gods but his overconfidence couldn't take him much far. Similarly, Dusshera marks the victory of good over evil and righteous over forceful suppression.
This day also marks the victory of Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, the devil who kidnapped Goddess Sita, the wife of Lord Ram and made her subject to extortion and bait Lord Ram into submission. Lord Ram killed Ravana on this very day in Lanka and burned him down.
