Why Never Wash Hair On Saturday?

Why Never Wash Hair On Saturday?

Why Not Wash Hair On Saturday?

We have all heard and followed many superstitions when we were kids, right? Some we tend to believe in, and some we brush off as something we might not need, trust, or believe.

But does that mean thaton't have to do the same if we don’t believe in some things? Or are they false? Or are they just myths spread to prove certain points in proper order?

No, and Yes.

Many things are true and based upon proper beliefs that make up the total religious atmosphere, but some things are invalid and have no proof There is a very high chance that everything that is said on the internet is fake or false or cannot be proved, but if there is anything that can save a person from darkness, negativity or anything that can make them a victim of their choices, then they might adapt the same and even advice the others to follow the same.

So, what is it? Is it good to believe in superstitions or not? We will discuss this a little later, but for now, we will only tell you what we know about the practice of not washing hair on Saturdays. Then, you can decide whether you want to follow this as a rule/ guideline or brush it off as a superstition.

Storytime

It is said that there was a lady who had a lot of money and she had nowhere to keep all the money and wealth. She would always complain about this to her husband. A lot of people told her to distribute the wealth to the poor and needy. That way she will have more and more wealth. We all know the concept of giving more to get more, right?

The lady said she had had enough and she was tired of managing everything. So she wasn’t interested in growing it any further.

Listening to this, someone advised her to wash her hair on Thursday and Saturday and cut her nails on those days too. She was also told to buy oil and massage her entire family’s head with it before washing her hair. This way, she will be able to manage all she has easily.

The lady didn’t understand the reason behind whatever was said and she blindly followed the same. Unfortunately, she started losing all her wealth and within no time her family was on the roads with nothing to spare.

One day when this lady went to beg for some food to survive, she saw the same person who advised her in a very nice suit and asked him how he prospered and she didn’t. He told her three important things that came to be known as the guidelines for not doing.

One, do not oil, wash hair, or cut nails on Saturday as it leads to depreciation of all accumulated wealth.

Two, never say you have a lot with you because that way you are angering anything and everything around you and you will lose it sooner than you think about it.

Three, if you give something to someone, do not talk about it. If you have to talk about giving, do not give.

Having said this, the person suddenly disappeared and all that was left behind were his clothes. There was a small note from amongst the clothes that said, “Do not blindly follow anything and everything told to you till you find some logic in it.”

The lady immediately understood that the person was no one but God himself and her being rude by saying “I have everything and I don’t want more because I can’t manage more” was very rude and might have angered God.

She finally decided to donate at least one thing on Saturdays as she received the knowledge on Saturdays. She stopped washing her hair or cutting nails on Saturday. Slowly her condition improved and she became better, stable, and humble with this lesson.

Superstition or Truth?

Now a lot of you might ask, where is this story in the Puranas or Vedas? Where is this written?

No, it’s not written anywhere. It’s an excerpt from Jatak Kathayen, the text that talks about common men and their encounters with God and Godmen on various occasions in a different manner than the ones expected normally.

Some of these stories get adapted into a routine following due to people being afraid of hearing about the consequences and some of these get brushed off as a rumor and mere stories in Jatak and Panchatantra Kathayen as a thing from the past that might not hold any reference or hold some reference but less significance.

So, what should this story be considered? A mere superstition? Or the truth? It will depend upon your beliefs and values.

For a lot of people, since they have seen their elders do this and be happy, they might follow this. Some others might ask a lot of questions to finally settle upon following or not following. For a lot of people, this would just be an add-on instruction that they wouldn’t be willing to follow and they will not follow it.

Will there be consequences if you don’t follow the advice? Only time can tell.

Have you been facing consequences if you weren’t following this tip? Only you can tell.

But if there is anything we can say, there are a lot of reasons to not believe in anything or not try to follow something but there is only one reason to follow something and accept something. That reason is you.

If you really feel that everything you see, read and listen to can be followed, it is your idea and if you do not want to follow something, then only you can tell if the statements you have seen, heard, and focussed upon are true and if yes, then to what extent.

What else is prohibited on a Saturday?

There is a very long list if you go as per an all-India level because region-wise, there are a lot of things that keep on differing due to changes in language, geography, culture, and belief system. There are a lot of things prohibited from doing on a Saturday and it almost feels impossible to try and follow every aspect, but it is still so easy and efficient that everyone can do it, once in the zone.

1. Do not wash your hair on Saturday. Do not oil your hair on Saturday and do not trim or cut or style your hair on Saturday even if there is an emergency. It is believed that doing this makes your belongings dead and useless and they will separate from you. So you stand the risk of losing your money, wealth, success, and prosperity if you oil, wash, trim or style your hair on Saturday.

2. Do not cut your nails on Saturday. Cutting your nails is like parting away with one part of your body and on Saturday, when Saturn is already at its peak and extremely powerful, you deserve to hold all the things of your body at your disposal just so that you can use it whenever you need it. Now a lot of people will say that nails are dead parts of the body and cutting it on a day when something bad or negative or ill might happen is like parting away with the bad and thus it's okay and not bad. There are chances that both are right. There are chances that both are wrong. What you should follow should be based on your wits.

3. Do not buy oil, ghee, or butter on Saturday. It is not advised to buy anything greasy on Saturday because these things are offered to Lord Shani. So if you buy these things, it is considered to be offered to Shani and it becomes his bite to own. If you use these for your private usage, then you will have to face the issue of angering Shani and you will be under poor scrutiny.

4. Do not buy any iron or products made of iron on Saturday. Any product that has iron in it should not be bought on a Saturday. The reason is because as we discussed earlier also, Shani is the planet that got to sit on the throne made of Iron. So he was given the metal iron for his rule. He claimed to his importance that everything that uses iron or has iron or will use iron will become his ultimately, thereby making him the most powerful, widespread, and demanded planet. So if you buy anything iron or made of iron on Saturday, you are inviting Shani to your place and are looking for an imbalance which will be uncalled for.

5. Do not buy anything black on Saturday. If you are getting anything black on Saturday, you are bringing Shani in your house, when you are the most vulnerable and Saturn is most active. Black represents negativity and darkness and on the day of ill omen, bringing something negative is like empowering Shani beyond already and then if there is anything that happens, it will be the fault of the buyer.

6. Do not accept anything from anyone especially a gift, anything black, a food item, or anything to keep for some time and then give back. Do not borrow anything from anyone, not even money on Saturday because that means if the other person is having a poor Shani, it will come up on you and you also will have to bear with the malefic effects which again is an uncalled-for issue upon you. Try saving yourself from this as much as possible and do not let the people who do not try to value your beliefs fluster you.

7. The second last thing you should avoid on Saturday is eating anything black. You might have heard of the black charcoal dishes, the black lentil (also called Urad Dal), and black chocolate. These foods are something that carries the essence of Shani or Saturn in it and they are offered to God. Since you offer God these dishes, you don’t consume them yourself so that you can gain the blessings of God and also save yourself from unwanted fury by angering God and taking his share.

8. The last thing you should avoid doing on Saturday is buying shoes. Any color shoes are prohibited to be bought on Saturday. The reason is that it is said that Shani doesn’t have his legs. There is a story behind the same which we will share in later blogs. So Shani has a poor leg and thus, they adopt the footwear of others to show their ownership. For this purpose, any footwear bought on Saturday only empowers bringing Shani inside the house, and thus, buying footwear is not suggested.

Now many of you will say that this makes no sense.

I hear you. And I understand you as well.

You don’t want to believe in some things because you desire to look at proofs and reasons first and then decide if you want to believe in it or not. But would you be willing to take the risks, make yourself uncomfortable, and land in a poor fix only to realize that what you did anger God, and now you have to make amends for your deeds?

If yes, then sure. You can try doing what your heart desires and defy the regulations.

But if you feel that you don’t want to risk all you have for something that doesn’t represent you, you should be aware of the fact that it will only be your actions that can save you from very bad, poor, or embarrassing situations while the same can land you in them as well.

This article is not here to scare you or tell you what you should not do. It’s here to tell you, what would be considered wrong in the eyes of a few people or a community that holds a particular belief system and there can be ways to come out of this, but all of it cannot be completely wrong and unprecedented.

This is also why there are a few Do’s enlisted for Saturday so that you know exactly that if you ever land in a situation of doing the don’ts, you’ll know how to redeem yourself from the same.

The do’s will be as follows:

1. Wash your hair or oil your hair one day before or after Saturday so that you don’t have to oil it on Saturday or wash it on Saturday. Suppose you have to wash your hair or oil your hair on Saturday and you don’t have a choice about it due to some circumstances not in your control, make sure to offer your prayers to Shani asking for forgiveness and donating something to someone in need so that they can use it. As in, give some food item or something to the needy. Here, giving something in good condition to a needy or poor is considered better than giving to a temple because this will be a good deed to cancel a bad deed whereas if you give to God, you are basically doing one bad deed and then trying to butter up God to make things right for you.

2. Work on your nails one day before or one day after Saturday so that you don’t have to cut, trim, or style them on Saturday. If by chance you have to cut or trim or style your nails on Saturday as you cannot get away with that due to your profession or situation, make sure again to give something in good condition to a poor or needy so that they can make their lives better and your bad is countered with a good deed to save you from pain and agony later.

3. Restock groceries on Friday or Sunday so that on Saturday, you don’t have to deal with buying oil or butter or ghee or anything that contains oil, butter, or ghee. If by chance you had to buy anything said above due to circumstances, make sure to donate a part of it to someone needy or a temple so that there is no way in which the onus of something bad comes upon you.

4. Postpone plans of shopping on Saturday if what you are going to buy is black or buy other things apart from the black color and the item in black color can be purchased later. Make sure to donate something black to someone in need. It could be black shoes, black clothes, or anything else so that you can make your plans as per your needs.

5. Donate or part away with something made of iron on Saturday. Items like nails or metal remain at home and should be parted away with as soon as possible and if there is a chance, just part away with the same on Saturday so that you remove unused iron and unwanted metal that can invite Shani to stay in the house, away from you and your house on Saturday.

6. Give away something unused at home to the fitting person on Saturday. It could be in good condition to be used by the other person easily. It could also be in a condition that it cannot be used by anyone and it has to be thrown or sold in scrap. But parting away with something unused and unwanted is more like giving away the chance of any negativity and thus keeping Shani at bay and under control. Suppose you have to buy something that you had to avoid, make sure to give away one portion of the same at least so that there is a mitigated effect upon you.

7. Feed someone with a sumptuous meal without thinking about the money you are spending. You will not be getting that money back. This will be something wherein you will be able to reduce a lot of your Shani dosh and also if by chance you had to eat with the money of someone else, spend on feeding for at least that amount and you will see your bad luck evaporating faster than anything else.

8. As explained above multiple times, if by chance you buy anything on Saturday is of the category to not buy from or thing to not do, try redeeming yourself with at least one selfless good deed without thinking about getting anything in return and maybe one day, you will realize that those good deeds could out your bad deeds, wrongs, mistakes, errors, and even crimes for a long time.

These deeds should however be done out of goodness of heart or redemption of bad and not because you purposely do something uncalled for or prohibited and then you try your hand at redemption by one such deed.

This is because if you have malice in your mind while doing something and then redeem yourself for doing that, you are still the culprit and also even a bigger one because you not only are breaking a law but also trying to gain eyeballs with malicious intentions.

Chances are, you might not redeem yourself, but land in a further poor state due to your naivety. So if you cannot handle or afford to follow everything, just say your prayers to God and carry on with your deed. But be ready to endure the hardships when they come your way because they will and then, you have to be the same brave you were while committing the acts prohibited.

Conclusion

So, does this mean you change things overnight and just like that? No.

Does this mean you have to become a bookwork monster and compromise with essentials even at the cost of nothing? No.

This only means that if there is a chance to make things all right by not making a big deal of it, then do that, but if things cannot go as per plan and you have to make certain compromises, then compensate for them with no questions asked to gain the same back.

Shani is not a bad thing or a scary thing. It’s a phase of darkness that can bring light at the end of its phase but it will test you a lot more times so that you truly deserve what your biggest skills are.

It is not desirable that you upset people around you in your surroundings. It is only desired that you be cautious of what you do so that it doesn’t hurt someone or you.
