What is Mahamrityunjaya Jaap? All To Know About Mantra, Jaap and Pooja

What is Mahamrityunjaya Jaap?

Have you all heard that when there is a threat to life, get your Mahamrityunjaya Jaap done? It will save your life? It will make you invincible? It will make you stronger and even immortal?

If the answer is yes, then let us know why it's wrong and what exactly Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is, why is it done, what are its benefits, what are its dangers, what myth, fact, and everything. This can be a fairly long blog so we might split it into multiple parts but we will add all the links to all the blogs here so that you can have your complete research before you commit to the same.

Mahamrityunjaya: The Nomenclature

If we dissect the word Mahamrityunjaya, we get Maha meaning Great in Sanskrit, Mrityu meaning Death in Sanskrit and Hindi, and Jaya meaning the act of finding victory and being praised for the same again in Sanskrit.

Therefore, The act of being able to find victory over death in a great manner to be praised for it is Mahamrityunjaya. The word Jaap or Japa or Japam means chants. So a chant for the bravado that can find victory over death and be praised for the same is Mahamrityunjaya Jaap.

Mahamrityunajaya: The God

As per Hindu Vedic Mythological scripts namely Rig Veda, the most ancient known literature of the world written in Sanskrit, Lord Shiva, the God of preservation of good and destroyer of evil is also known as Mahamrityunjaya or the one who can defeat death and the diseases to make the life of the person lively, healthy and happy.

Shiva or Lord Shiva is considered to own deaths and evil spirits. So much so that when Shiva got married to Parvati, his wife and an incarnation of Goddess Durga, the witness and family side of Lord Shiva were the army of the dead, defeated, evil, and ghosts. It is believed that Lord Shiva was the only one who understood how to control the nether world (Paatal Lok) and thus, he was the one who could handle the evils. This was why Lord Shiva can command the spirits, ghosts, and evils to leave a person’s life happy or bring the person’s soul out of them to end their lives and give the soul a rebirth.

There are multiple instances and multiple stories in different Vedic texts, but all of them point out the fact that since Shiva or Lord Shiva had the power, connection, and capacity to deal with the devil, he was known as the one who mastered death, evil, spirits, omens and ghosts and thus, if there has to be anyone to be worshipped so that they can relive the worshipper out of pain and problems, it has to be Shiva or Lord Shiva or Lord Mahamrityunjaya or Lord Mahamrityunjaya Shiva.

But Why Shiva?

This is a brilliant question. A lot of people have doubts that if there are so many Gods and Goddesses and priests and learned men, why Lord Shiva? And if him, then how exactly did he get the name Mahamrityunjaya?

The answer again lies in the Vedic texts that talk about the evolution of Earth and the creation of the universe and life on the same.

It is believed that Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva were the Gods of the single big ball of fire, which was a universe until there was an explosion and the entire big ball of fire dispersed into small fragments of galaxies with each galaxy having its powerhouse, stars, asteroids and everything else.

The entire world was created with the aim that there has to be life and development in different conundrums.

Lord Brahma, who was the mastermind behind the idea of the creation of life became the creator and he selected to take the sky, the air, and the depth of the unknowns under his jurisdiction. He also took control of the life of the creatures who were to live the life. He even took care of the Vedic scriptures so that they could establish law, order, rules, regulations, directions, guidelines, and structure to make the living of life start up from scratch.

Lord Vishnu, the second one in the pack of three, took up the task of managing the smallest to biggest concerns of all the living beings from humans to animals and plants and all that was available on Earth or land. Lord Vishnu made sure that all his subjects were taught the lessons of living and existing well and that if anyone faced a problem, he should be the one handling the same. Lord Vishnu, the administrator and the keeper of the people, took up the challenge of being on the land and taking care of the living and the knowns.

After the unknown and air were taken by Lord Brahma and the living and land were taken by Lord Vishnu, the spirits, energies, omens, and the nether world needed someone to adopt them. This was where the Lord stepped in and took command of everything else not taken over by Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. Now since the nature of the adopted by Lord Shiva was fierce and scary and destructive, Lord Shiva became the God of keeper of poor and bad.

This is how, Lord Shiva became the owner of death, devils, and destroyers. He had to then decide if he wanted to side with the devils and demons or become their owner, leader, commander, and God. For this reason, he had to know a little more about himself.

We all know about the time Lord Shiva had to go through a tough transformation in his life while realizing the potential of the human body. He was subjected to extreme pain and sadness on the death of his wife, Sati and then he was mourning her loss by aggrevating his pain. When Lord Vishnu understood that the situation had left control, then he came to the rescue and finally stopped Shiva from self-harm and in turn, harming the others.

After that, Lord Shiva went into a deep state of meditation to know more about the body, its capacity, its limitations, and its extremities. This was when he was known as the God of the Yogis or the Adiyogi, the first Yogi.

Post this, Lord Shiva decided to renounce the world and go somewhere else as he had understood everything about life and human life. Then he understood that if he had known everything about the living, he also needed to know about the dead. Thus, the God who dared to know more about the dead is called the Mahamrityunjaya or the one who could have the courage and bravery to try and become victorious over the dead.

Mahamrityunjaya: The Story

There are many stories of how Lord Shiva became the Mahamrityunjaya. We will discuss the one most commonly referred to as under.

When there was a fight between the Devas (Gods) and the Asuras (Devils), it was decided that the ocean should be churned and whatever came out of it would be taken by each party to give them a livelihood, a reason to live, and exist.

Lord Brahma's side became the host who would look upon the fairness of the entire process. Lord Vishnu became the referee for the Devas and Lord Shiva was left with the only option of being the referee to the devils.

The ocean started giving something or the other and when no one would accept something, then Lord Shiva would take it so that the process would start. So when people denied taking the snake, Shiva accepted it. When people denied taking poison, Shiva accepted it. When people denied taking spirits and ghosts, Shiva accepted it. In the end, when Lord Dhanvantri, or the God of medicine came, he decided to go to Lord Shiva as he was worried about Lord Shiva’s health due to everything he had accepted.

But when Lord Vishnu wanted to take Lord Dhanvantri and the rules were set that whoever takes the first call gets the same other than Amrit (immortal nectar), Lord Dhanvantri agreed to the fact that whoever worships Lord Shiva will get the blessing of Lord Dhanvantri also.

At the end of the ordeal, Lord Shiva received the Amrit which kept him in an immortal state. Hence, even after being the commander of dead and evil, even after consuming poison, even after being the one handling all the pains, Lord Shiva still got the Amrit and was thriving better than the rest with Lord Dhanvantri’s blessing as well. This was when it was realized that Lord Shiva was the true person who had defeated death, handled evil, and endured pain all along with gaining immortality Amrit, and freedom from diseases and health issues. The best part was, all this was very brave of Lord Shiva even if it was out of his simplicity and acceptance.

So, in the literal sense, our Lord Shiva becomes the Mahamrityunjaya and hence the name. And now we know, why the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is considered the best for the people who might want to end suffering.

Mahamrityunjaya: The Mantra

Om Trayambakam Yajamahe, Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Purva Rukamiva Bandhanaat, Mriturmukshiya Maamritaat.

Mahamrityunjaya: The Mantra Meaning

O hail Lord Shiva, the one who can save me from death, pain, disease, and rebirth, the preserver of the universe and the conserver of the good and the destroyer of the evil, take care of me, my health, and my life from all possible and probable evils.

Mahamrityunjaya: The Jaap (Chants)

There are different levels of Jaap of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, specifically for the people who need their Jaap done in a specific manner for specific reasons and purposes.

10 Thousand Jaap- This is done by the people who need clarity of mind so that they can establish a good healthy lifestyle and not invite anything trouble-making in their lives.

25 Thousand Jaap- This is done by people who are facing some small and menial issues in life or are scared that something small but negative might come around them.

50 Thousand Jaap- This is done by the people who are interested in a routine jaap at particular intervals with no specific outcome but to maintain peace and positivity around them and their family members.

1.25 Lakhs Jaap- This is done by the people who are going through a very difficult phase in their lives and they want to make a huge change in their lives by getting rid of the impounding pain and free themselves from issues they haven’t otherwise thought about. This is considered heavenly for the people who are having a toll on their lives and who want all the above advantages along with the safety of their lives with their family members and loved ones from a huge and bigger danger that might cost their lives if not taken care of properly.

The most effective and the most useful jaap is the last one, the 1.25 Lakh Jaap due to its immediate relief and remedy that it provides to the worshipper in whose name it is done. However easy it is to say that this Mantra increases life, it is the one to numb the pain and reduce suffering so much to stop it.

Mahamrityunjaya Jaap: The Process

A good Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is done by starting with Ganesha Poojan followed by the Sankalp for the Pooja with the specific purpose of the Pooja defined in the Sankalp itself. After this, a general Lord Shiva Pooja is done followed by the starting of the Mantra Jaap with proper counts. At the end of the complete number of Jaaps, an optional Rudrabhishek is done. After the Rudrabhishek is completed, Dashant Hawan is also done to mark the completion of the Pooja. After this, the Sankalp is completed with Aarti and Kshama Yaachana (asking for forgiveness in case of any issues and mistakes due to incomplete information). Post the Pooja, the Pooja Prasad is provided to the worshipper along with an energized Rudraksha Mala which was used to do the Mantra Jaap.

This Pooja is a time-consuming process and extremely lengthy depending upon the number of rituals and number of Jaaps you want to add to the list until conclusion. The Pooja can be wrapped in one day also and can go on for over a month, depending upon the number of steps and rituals and number of people involved in completing the Pooja.

Mahamrityunjaya Jaap: Results Explained

There are a lot of things said and written about the mighty Mahamrityunjaya Jaap by various people. Some are based on the literal translation of the Vedic texts and some are assumptions based upon logic and understanding. Having said this, some others are just opinions, which can be anecdotal or situation-specific but may not be widely accepted or generally true to their essence.

Dosh Mukti (Removal of grave consequences due to poor actions)- A very common myth among the people is that if Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is done for a person, this person will be able to survive all the pains, attacks, and evils and will become invincible and immortal. But Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Jaap is not for increased life. This is a Karm Dosh Mukti Mantra or the mantra to remove your action-based consequences and thus if your bad deeds and their consequences are removed from your life and you still have time to live on, this mantra will help you reach there.

Increased Life- Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is not to increase the life of a person. It is to give a better lifestyle to the person. If the age you have to live has been decided at 55 years, then Mahamrityunjaya Mantra cannot pull it to 55.1 years or 56 years. It can make sure that either the person completes their life till 55 years or ends up early without pain and diseases if the purpose of the soul in that body is served to the fullest and it's time for the soul to find a new home.

Pain Relief- Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is best for people who need relief from pain and suffering. So if the person is undergoing a lot of pain and suffering due to any life-threatening consequences or is about to get into one situation wherein there will be huge pain and suffering, then the person is likely to think about getting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Jaap done for themselves. In such a circumstance, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra will remove the pain and suffering of the person. This means, that if the life of the person remains without that suffering, then only the person will be alive or else the Mantra Jaap will remove the pain and suffering and remove the life of the person, thereby, freeing the soul completely.

Happening life- Sometimes, Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is only done for health and happiness to evade all problems and troubles in life. This is a good cause so that you can save yourself from unwanted negativities that can spoil your lifestyle mood or mental health. Anyone can have a happening lifestyle, but they need to be sure that this does not go beyond a point where happening turns into tragedy. This is where Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Jaap will save you from painful situations, falling into trouble, or getting you a disease-free life.

It is very important to note that Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is considered to be a pain reliever and not a life extender or immortality provider. So if the person is in a critical situation and there is nothing that can save the life, then Mahamrityunjaya Jaap will save the person from pain and give them a painless death by freeing the soul from misery.

So if you are sure that come what may, but you are ready to accept all consequences of the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap, then only get the same. If in case you are in doubt, we would encourage you to consult an astrologer once before making a rash decision so that you can save emotional damages inflicted upon yourself owing to this pain reliever Mahamrityunjaya Jaap.

Mahamrityunjaya Jaap: The Pooja by Rudraksha Hub

At Rudraksha Hub, we make sure of all the processes most authentically and traditionally. We take individual responsibility for each Pooja and each person’s pooja is done separately. We do not club the Pooja of two different people because we know that it is unethical and we cannot play around with the feelings of our worshippers.

We get the Pooja done with one Panditji and we make sure that the Pooja is done with maximum efficiency. We can increase the number of Panditji as per the demands but still, the Pooja will be done daily.

There is one thing that we, as Rudraksha Hub, do to make sure that the worshipper is happy. We do the Pooja at Mahamrityunjaya Temple in Varanasi. The Mahamrityunjaya Jaap being done at the Mahamrityunjaya Temple on the Mahamrityunjaya Shivling makes the Jaap more overpowering than being done in any other temple.

The natural speed of a Panditji to complete the Jaap is 5000 Mantras per day. But it depends upon the nature of the requirement of the person and the intensity of the problem wherein the actual time is decided by increasing the number of Panditji thereby speeding up the number of chants and reducing the number of days taken. However, this comes at an increased cost, which will be based on the worshipper's budget.

We ensure that the proper Sankalp video of the worshipper is sent to them daily until the Pooja is completed. We also make sure to send a short Pooja clip to the worshipper for their satisfaction.

A note on the Pooja is that our Panditji rotates once on every Swayambhu Shivlinga in Mahamriyunjaya Temple for doing the Jaap of the day. this is because there are 21 Shivalingas total in the Mahamrityunjaya Temple (read more about all this in our blog of Mahamrityunjaya Temple), so if there is a possibility to explore the blessings of all the Swayambhu Shivalingas and his incarnations in one jaap, and the remaining ones on the main Mahamrityunjaya Shivlinga, there will be no way in which the person has to feel suffering in any form.

At the end of the Pooja, we also send the Rudrabhishek photo and video if the same has been opted by the worshipper with the Jaap. Along with this, at the end of the Jaap, there is a Dashant Hawan, which is a mandatory ordeal and needs to be done to mark the end of the Pooja, as described above. We share all the details of the Hawan and Pooja with the worshipper.

We also ship the Pooja Prasad and Energized Rudraksha Mala to the worshipper. Additionally, if the worshipper wants, we also provide an energized Mahamrityunjaya Yantra so that the person can keep the blessings in their Pooja room and harbor the benefits of the Pooja for a lifetime.

We make sure to keep asking for the health and fitness of the person for whom the Pooja is being done so that the person exactly knows that they are being taken care of and we also know the status of their issues and we can take interim remedial actions through any additional Mantras or special prayers to improve by the very day itself.

Why Rudraksha Hub?

In this highly competitive market, there is a huge chance of mistrusting anyone where everyone has their song to sing in a tune they have perfected. It is a very clear understanding that there can be chances of mistrust and betrayal of taking advantage of the worshipper's trust and leading them the wrong way solely for monetary purposes.

Yes, that is a possibility and a lot of market forces do the same for quick and easy money. But we never do the same. We don’t cut a frame that is not stitched for us. We have a habit of procuring our leads most genuinely and we vouch for all the possible transparency possible for the Pooja and mantra for our worshippers. We aim for repeat customer service and we do not engage with any lead until we are more than sure of the possibility of us doing 100% justice with the Pooja.

Having said that, all these sound clinically added to aim at gaining trust so we would love to present you the testimonials reviews, and feedback of our customers who have trusted us earlier and have noticed visible changes in their lives.

Case Study 1: A Critical Case of an Elderly Person in ICCU

This was a very difficult case because the elderly gentleman was almost 90 years old and he was long suffering from diseases that were making all his body weak and unresponsive. His son wanted us to do the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap Pooja and we told him that this might be a risky decision. Since he was adamant about getting the Pooja done, come what may the circumstances, we requested him to talk to the Panditji once and confirm if this was the final decision or not. Luckily he agreed and then the Panditji consulted the son for a long time. He told some grave details and then managed to convince the person to rather go for a Shani Jaap than a Mahamrityunjaya Jaap and after some time, the customer got the said Pooja done with us. His father, who was suffering and was in pain suddenly started getting better and we were overjoyed because we knew how hairline weak this case was. This is why we say, we don’t force our sales on you. You are free to make your decisions but if we feel that they might cause you harm or damage, then even though you trust in us or not, we will still not let you make those decisions until you are 100% informed and we will never take those wrong decisions on your part even if you are 100% informed and 100% sure also.

Case Study 2: A Case of Never-Ending Fury

We received an inquiry from a lady who was married and settled in the USA and she was facing a lot of issues with her marriage and decision to relocate to the USA after 18 years. She wanted to move from the USA to India so that there would be at least some opportunity at someplace. She conducted a lot of research and finally landed with us. We got her Kundali analyzed by the Panditji and finally, he suggested getting a Mahamrityunjaya Jaap and then thereafter deciding if she still wants to relocate. Convinced with the entire conversation, she finally agreed and got her Jaap done. It’s been approximately one year to this and she is still settled in the USA, this time with a stable job paying her bills. She might need a better job after some time but it is always better than not having anything at hand and piled up unpaid bills. We took the Sankalp for her clearly stating that she needs freedom from the obstacles in getting her a better lifestyle and job.

Case Study 3: Vish Kanya Dosh and Family Disputes

A nice lady from the Eastern side of India connected with us after she was diagnosed with Vish Kanya Dosh. She was told that anything she does and anywhere she goes, she will always have fights all around. She will not have a good relationship with her family, friends, relationships, and anyone personally or professionally due to this Dosh. She made all the effort and a lot of Poojas, loads of products from a lot of sellers, and finally, she found us after months of contemplation. She told us how everything she was told was coming true and how she was frustrated and wasn’t able to see the light at the end of the tunnel in her life. She was ready to give up on her life anytime. We were one last chance she wanted to give to treat this Vish Kanya Dosh. We understood that this was as crazy and dangerous as it sounds. So we started her Pooja with immediate effect, on her birthday and we gave her a time of 28 days to see the difference in her life. However, she was a very frustrated person and it was not a miracle that she became polite in a day, we kept asking her about her well-being, and one fine day on Day 26 she finally agreed that she got used to waking up to our Sankalp video and she would miss it after her Jaap was over. This small change was also a huge thing as she had told me earlier that she was a hard-wired, zero-emotion person.

Case Study 4: Gaining Strength to Handle Extreme Mental Pressure without Giving Up on Life

In March 2024, we received a query from a girl who was extremely worried about her brother. He was in his final year at college and he wanted to sit for the placements. But he had a backlog in a few subjects and thus he wasn’t allowed to sit for the placements. He was going under a tough mental state wherein he was seeing his favorite companies come to campus and yet his low marks in two subjects were making him unavailable for this placement drive. We were told to do the Pooja on his behalf so that he gets peace and can think about what to do after this. We got them in touch with Panditji and he said that this condition can slowly increase even more because of his poor planetary position and thus if he wants to save himself from permanent or long-term damages, he should get the Jaap done. It took them three weeks to decide, but finally, there was a reply from them agreeing to the Jaap. Today, the boy is employed with a reputed FMCG company at a senior level and he was able to find a bridge between his existing issues and the dreams he had for himself.

Case Study 5: Brain Tumor Surgery with Only 5% Chances of Survival

We received a stress call from a lady whose husband was in and out of the hospital several times in the past year due to a very critical case of a brain tumor. She had exhausted all her options for a good spiritual treatment that could give relief to the patient. Even Panditji was very skeptical about this case and he said he did not feel this case was a good decision. But since the client stated in full command that she was ready to take all the consequences, but she found out consulting very very genuine and thus she would love to go ahead with the Jaap, we went on to start the Pooja for her husband. Over the next few weeks, she kept telling me how her husband was slowly recovering. The rounds in and out of the hospital were still on, but the intensity of pain was reducing. She repeated the entire Pooja three times and is very likely to repeat the Jaap for the fourth time till he doesn’t get his final surgery and discharge.

Case Study 6: The Unwanted Result Coming True

When we say, we don’t accept the contract of Pooja if it is too risky and the person is not ready to handle the consequences of those actions, we mean it only because of this case. During the second wave of the COVID-19 virus, we received a call from a person who wanted to get the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap for her ailing mother. She was over 84 years of age, extremely ill, contracted COVID-19, and was already hospitalized long before Covid struck. The doctors had given up and had announced a week or so for life to exist. The son was adamant that he wanted the Pooja done and he was sure that it would heal his mother. He even threatened that either we do the Pooja for his mother or he will get it done by someone else and if anything goes wrong, he will even sue us. We agreed on a term that if the Jaap shows any effect in the first three days, then only we will get it continued and we will accept payment only after those three days for those three days or the number of days for which the Pooja was on. It was unbelievable how only within the first five hours of the Pooja, the lady was relieved of her pain. Her soul traveled from her body towards its final destination and the son contacted us only for us to say, “We told you so.” He paid us for one day of service however being fully convinced with us that we were right and he was responsible for the early demise of his mother. But in all fairness, she had been ailing and in extreme pain for a long time and her soul was hanging by a thin cord that the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap just freed to give an easy death.

These are just six different cases out of over a hundred cases we go through daily. There is a high chance that there will be an addition by us to this with time.

So, in general, Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is a boon to you for helping you stay fit, happy, and able to celebrate your happiness. If you have life remaining, Mahamrityunjaya Jaap will save you at all costs and if the life is not remaining, then Mahamrityunjaya Jaap will act as a catalyst to quicken the process and eliminate pain.

If you are interested in getting your Mahamrityunjaya Jaap, we at Rudraksha Hub would love to get it done for you in the Mahamrityunjaya Temple in Varanasi, the only Swayambhu (Something that appears naturally without human intervention) Mahamrityunjaya Shivling without a Nandi Maharaj (The ox who is the Lord Shiva’s aide and chariot) because Lord Shiva only delivers results here without any pleas.

Why Mahamrityunjaya Shiv Temple in Varanasi?

We know why Lord Shiva is called Mahamrityunjaya. We now also know the meaning of Mahamrityunjaya. This means there is immense power in Lord Shiva’s Mahamrityunjaya incarnation. But did you know that there are 14 dimensions of Lord Mahamrityunjaya himself?

Yes, that’s right.

We will discuss the names of all these forms and their meanings, reasons, and powers in the next blog. But for starters, all these are Swayambhu or the ones that appeared themselves without anyone’s knowledge and any human or nonhuman interference.

We promise you, for every day, your Sankalp will be taken over one new Shivlinga from these 14 Shivalingas and that way, within 28 days, you will have your Sankalp and Jaap taken twice on each Shivlinga, thereby making your Pooja 100% complete and effective.

The best part of having the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap Pooja done in Varanasi in Mahamrityunjaya Temple is that there is no Nandi (The ox/ bull) that stays in front of the Shivlinga to take care of Lord Shiva, to carry him along anywhere, to make your prayers reach Lord Shiva faster and to make details work better.

This is because, in Mahamrityunjaya Temple in Varanasi, there is no pleading. There is no asking for wishes. It is like the court of law wherein there are no pleas heard and only decisions given. So if your case is strong enough wherein you don’t need legal representation and you don’t need any objection, the judge will try to rule in your favor and finish the case as soon as possible and Lord Mahamrityunjaya is in the judge’s seat at the Mahamrityunjaya Temple in Varanasi at Daranagar, Chowk.
