What is Sawan?
Sawan is the fifth month in the Indian calendar. It falls right after Ashadh (the month of mid-June-mid July) and right before Bhadrapad (the month of mid-August- mid-September). It is the month that starts with the Purnima right after HariShayani (VishnuShayani) Ekadashi and ends with Rakshabandhan. This is the month in which Lord Shiva takes charge of the administration, management, and control of the Earth and Earthly matters and makes sure that alongside his role of removing the bad omens and forces from Earth and blessings the good omens for humans, the roles and duties of Lord Vishnu is also fulfilled properly. This entire thing lasts for a month from the Purnima of Sawan to the Purnima of Rakshabandhan and hence, the entire month is worshipped as Lord Shiva’s month.
Meaning of Sawan
Sawan, as the word is pronounced or written, is the distorted word of Shraawan. Shraawan typically means the rainfall of something over the natural area. “Shraa” means shower and “Wan” meaning jungle or forest. In the literal sense, it means rainfall of something in the natural areas. Now, as the month is from Mid-June to mid-July period, this is the time of the Monsoon, and this time zone leads to rainfall.
Mythologically, this rainfall is because when Lord Shiva took the position of Lord Vishnu and started managing everything from his shoes, he could not bear the pains and agony the human race was going through because of multiple reasons. He could not understand what he should do and he started shedding tears. When his tears fell on Earth, amidst the scorching heat shed by Lord Agni for summers, the Earth area of that region cooled down and a sapling rose from the ground. The farmer, who was very sad at the condition of his farms rejoiced with happiness and pride. When Lord Shiva understood that his crying made people happy, he shed a little more tears and also arranged for a lot of other sources that could shed water on Earth and let the plants grow. This also helped in the crops and agriculture and made the farmers and inhabitants of the Earth happy.
Thus, the rainfall of water from the skies on the natural ground area for the betterment of the public is the month of Shraawan. Scientifically speaking, Shraawan month starts with the downpour of first-ever rain from the skies as the clouds (a huge mass of dirt and dust and moisture) become excessively laden with the heaviness of moisture and they need to release the same. So they fall on Earth from the stratosphere and due to Earth’s gravitational pull, they break down into multiple pieces each time they hit anything with force on their way down and the big, huge stream of water becomes sprinkles of water and falls on Earth. Saawan month is blessed by rainfall in every case whether it is mythological or scientific.
There is one more explanation for the term Shraawan to be called so. In Sanskrit, the word Shrawan means "to listen." Thus, it is believed that in the month of Shrawan, there is a huge chance of attaining the zenith of devotion only by listening to the supreme and divine intervention of God. There is nothing more powerful than careful listening, or listening and understanding, which leads to a lot of blessings and an improved personal lifestyle. It is said that in Kalyug, only listening to the cleanest form of devotion and dedication can help the person attain Salvation, even if the person never chants the name. So, if there is anyone looking for the shortest route to heaven and the fastest route to Salvation, and avoiding themselves from the circle of life and death again and again, then just listen. Listen to the sound of devotion on any platform, in any temple, anywhere and it is enough for an eternity.
Why is Sawan celebrated?
As discussed above, Shraawan is a month-long service of Shiva for his devotees on Earth so that there is no evil force that can take while Lord Vishnu is resting. In his duty, Lord Shiva has to arrange for the happiness and contentment of his subjects at any cost. It is believed that his subjects at Kailash started to worry about Shiva’s continuous work and his worked-up schedule. They saw that Lord Shiva was continuously working with the problems at the hand in his domain and Lord Vishnu’s domain also. So everyone at Kailash started worshipping him with multiple offerings like water, fruits, Bilwa Patra, milk, honey, and other things to keep him satiated and yet be able to handle his workload efficiently.
This is exactly why people on Earth worship Lord Shiva with different things so that these things can be offered to Lord Shiva in exchange for blessings and fulfillment of desires accordingly.
