Aisa kehkar shokakul man wale Arjun baansahit dhanush ka tyaag karke yudha bhoomi me rath ke madhya bhaag me baith gaye.
English Translation
With these words, Arjun let go of his bow and arrows amid battle and sank into his chariot, his mind tormented by sorrow.
Meaning
In the previous Shlok, we saw how Arjun had finally given all the possible reasons he could to say why he was no more interested in a war and that he would not fight the battle come what may. He decided that if the war had to happen still, he would prefer to die at the hands of the sinners and let their sin than be the sinner himself and kill a lot of innocent people in a battle which was mainly the result of some swollen egos and bruised brains.
In this Shlok, we see how Sanjaya says that with the end of Arjun’s cry over his fate and his people’s safety, there is also an end to Chapter-1 of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta. There will be only answers to the questions and queries raised by Arjun to Shri Krishna because Arjun knows it is not about him anymore. It is about his family. But Shri Krishna also knows that it is not about Arjun or his family only anymore. It is about the world and its order and system and if Shri Krishna himself defies the design on the grounds of sympathy, then the path ahead cannot be paved by anyone and anyways, Adharma will win.
Sanjaya tells Dhritrashtra that he could see Arjun sitting down on his chariot after telling Shri Krishna everything he felt and why he was reluctant to fight the battle. Arjun said that if he has to die and if these people have to die, he will not fight. He will sit idle, without his bow and arrow and he will let Kauravas kill him. He will not retaliate.
Saying this, Arjun sat down on his chariot, with his bow and arrow lowered and placed away in a quitting position. Sanajay narrated everything to Dhritrashtra and was expecting Dhritrashtra to show and exhibit some emotions, but Dhritrashtra was speechless. He knew that there was a war staring into each other's eyes. He knew his sons and the sons of his demised brother, Pandu, were fighting and his sons were wrong so they might even lose. He still was ambitious and he wanted to know if there is any chance that they can win and things can be over with. So, everyone wanted to exhibit a deep sense of sorrow seeing the blue-eyed fighter boy Arjun quitting but nill expressions on Dhritrashtra’s face could not explain the reason why he was this lost. Was he happy that now his sons could see a chance to win? Was he suspicious that Arjun was just playing the game and everyone knew Arjun never quits, so was Arjun planning something under the sleeves, which was not like Arjun at all?
Dhritrashtra was busy in his thoughts that Sanjaya could not read, so he was engaged in his thoughts trying to interpret Dhritrashtra’s thoughts. Sanjaya, therefore, narrated how Arjun kept his Gaandiv aside with his left hand to his left side and how he made peace with his current situation.
With this, we come to the end of chapter-1 of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta. We need to note a few things before starting with a new chapter.
Om Tat Sat is something that ends every chapter. This is done because there can be manual errors and changes that a person can commit knowingly or unknowingly because they might not be able to pronounce the Shlokas in the best possible manner. Thus, to avoid any issues or mispronunciations and their repercussions, saying Om Tat Sat at the end of any Shloka makes up for the errors and mistakes.
Tat means anything that has been done becomes successful. Sat means the fruit obtained from doing anything, any action is better and sweeter only.
Adding Iti at the end of the entire Shloka means that’s it. It means that there is no other option or no other desire.
Conclusion
Sometimes losing is not an option but winning at any cost is also impossible, so the easy way out is to quit. Brave are those who face it when there is no chance of winning. Arjun was brave, but was he the bravest? No. Because he didn’t hold the courage to face the most difficult situation where he was under extreme pressure to do the right thing. So will Arjun wake up and act maturely? Time alone will tell.
