English Translation
For I see nothing that would dispel this sorrow of mine which desiccates my senses, even if on Earth I obtained unrivaled wealth, a kingdom, yes, even sovereignty over the Gods.
Meaning
In the previous Shlok, we saw how Arjun finally surrendered to the fate and decisions of the universe and he wanted to gain knowledge from Shri Krishna about everything that was happening.
In this Shlok, we will see how Arjun concludes by finally saying that he cannot see anything that concludes with happy living thereafter and how will he come out of the pain of losing their own people.
Arjun thinks that Shri Krishna feels if they fight, then the Pandavas will win. The Kauravas will get a lesson and the more deserving gets to rule. Everyone will be tension free and no one will be under the purview of injustice. But Arjun feels that Shri Krishna is not understanding the kind of mental state Arjun is in and the way he is hating everything about it, around him was making him obvious to guilt, pain, and agony and no one was able to see the same.
Arjun was feeling that even if he gets all the wealth of the world and everything he wants, his family gets all the wealth they want and nothing else they desire, his people get all the wealth they desire and every other happiness they want, and no one has any losses or any issues in their lives to an extent that everyone is happy and no one needs anything more to be happy because they have everything they want including mental health, yet Arjun was not interested in the same and he was not able to see how he was happy.
Arjun says that not just in this world but in heaven also, if he gets all the happiness of Indra’s empire, and the entire wealth of every other empire on Earth and on heaven also, still his tension, his jealousy, and his guilt will not leave him because to get all this, he would have killed his family and made the other family to kill their families in the name of battle and revenge.
Arjun was only interested in getting peace of mind because he tried to see as per his entire mind frame and there was nothing his mind could process that could justify this war. The only thing that made sense with everything was to kill the family members and it was not n option Arjun would ever want to consider.
Arjun was very clear from the beginning. He didn’t want a kingdom or empire or happiness. He just wanted satisfaction for his family so that they do not struggle. Arjun could not bear the fact that the people for who he was ready to give up everything were standing there ready to kill and be dead. So he understood that whatever he wanted was not for his own self and his family didn’t need anything. So he had the Vairagya mindset active and now, he didn’t want even justice to be served.
Arjun knew that he was not feeling any kind of attachment or detachment to his prior goals. He was just having a guilt of where everything had landed and he was just tired of all of this, so he wanted to stop everything and just retire from the materialism of the world once and for all.
Conclusion
Arjun knew what he was walking into before he decided to fight. He knew very well that Duryodhan will talk about a war. He still sent Shri Krishna to mediate. He then pledged to kill Duryodhan and Kauravas and teach them a lesson as well as avenge everything. He knew well this was more than coming how way sooner than he actually thought. He still tried to suppress his feelings and all of it overpowered his thinking to cloud his vision and he got cold feet at the wrong time. Arjun now wanted to give up everything and go back to normal when things were way ahead of the normal line. So now, he had to make the tough decision. Will he be able to do it efficiently?
