What exactly is Rudraksha?
The Rudraksha tree produces Rudraksha seed, also known as Elaeocarpus Ganitrus (Scientific name). Rudra (another name for Lord Shiva) + Aksha (teardrop) are two Sanskrit words that make up this name. Rudraksha primarily refers to "Lord Shiva's Tears." The tears, it is told, are the consequence of Shiva's compassion as he thought about humanity's eternal suffering. In essence, Rudraksha provides mankind with relief from pain and a connection to the holy Aksha, which also means Shiva's eye in Sanskrit.
Rudraksha is the most sacred bead in Hinduism, and it is worn by famous Yogis, monks, saints, sages, and religious people from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, and across Asia.
DO’s and DON’Ts of wearing holy Rudraksha
Rudraksha is a symbol of Satvikta (a way of life that gives you a direction to peace and space for morality). Rudraksha should therefore be avoided while in any act of Rajasi (a lifestyle that represents extreme and unnecessary luxury) and Tamsi (a lifestyle that represents the requirement of anger, misguidance, lust, intoxication, gambling, betting, betrayal, and any such illegal/ unethical way to live). For such reasons, there are some rules for wearing Rudraksha.
Following are some do’s and don’ts of wearing Rudraksha if you wish to get the maximum benefit out of it.
DO’s
- Wear with the way prescribed. Although Rudraksha never has side effects, it is always better to wear it in a properly prescribed manner. Make sure to recite the Beej Mantra of the bead at least 5 times before wearing the bead for the first time. (For knowing the beej mantra of different Rudraksha, visit www.rudrakshahub.com )
- It is suggested that Rudraksha be cleaned every six months.
- Wear on a Monday but in case a Monday is not possible, wear on the day of the prescribed God. If that is also not possible, wear it on any day except a few days like Saturday, Amavsya (No Moon Day), Grahan (Eclipse), Sootak Kaal (The duration of cleaning and getting pure when someone in the family expires), Saudi Kaal/ Vriddhi Kaal (15 days of the newborn baby in the family), Pitra Paksha (15 days of Pitra coming on Earth), Kharmaas/ Poos Maas (30 days of no Shubh Activity) and some similar occasions when going Shubh activity should be performed.
- Wear with clear intention. Thinking of harming someone else will not help your cause.
- Wear it after having it Jaagrit/ Abhimantrit/ Siddh or just wear it after worshipping it. It will benefit more. However, in case you cannot get it energized/ Jaagrit/ Abhimantrit/ Siddh/ Pran Pratishthit, it does not mean it will not affect you. In addition, you can wear the Rudraksha with a simple mantra of “Om Namah Shivaay” and save the impending costs of all the above.
- In case you remove Rudraksha whenever the need is, keep it in a clean and dry place.
- If the bead is damaged due to any reason, dispose of it in a pond/ lake or a water body or dig it under the roots of a tree (preferred trees are Madaar/ Bilwapatra).
- It is preferred to remove it at night. After you have taken a bath the next morning, wear it again.
- It is advised for girls to remove Rudraksha when in their menstrual cycle to maintain hygiene. At least for the first 4 days before washing up hair, and until the girl is ready for Pooja, remove the Rudraksha and put it in a clean place. Wear it after freshening up.
- Mixing various forms of Rudraksha is not a good idea.

It will be extremely simple to understand how to treat Rudraksha if we first learn the essence and nature of the thing that it is. It is both a tree seed and an item that is sensitive to its environment. It also has the ability to take on the characteristics of the person who wears it.
Now that we know Rudraksha is a delicate seed, we can see why it should be treated with respect. The individual who wears Rudraksha is always under Lord Shiva's protection. No amount of pain or negative energy will ever be able to bring that person down. Wear Rudraksha as a sign of love and devotion to Lord Shiva.
