English Translation

Arjun saw that in the Kaurava army, there were a lot of fathers, grandfathers, sons, grandsons, teachers, preachers, uncles, brothers, friends, friends of friends, and other relatives standing ready for war.

Meaning

In the previous SHlok, we saw how Shri Krishna brought the chariot of Arjun straight in front of the Kaurava army at his request so that he could get a clear picture of what was going on and who all were against the Pandavas. Arjun was the one who had to do anything in his might to minimize the war damages and win this war for the Pandavas to establish the point of truth and honesty for the world.

Shri Krishna proved to Arjun how his people were against him and if now he gave up, he will again let the bad win over the good this time it was way beyond that so if he does not take any action, there is some action predecided by nature.

Shri Krishna did not say that there was some action predecided because he knew that if he aids this in advance, Arjun will not put forward his thoughts and thus, he meant the same by referring to all the Kauravas as Kuruvanshis or the followers of the bad and wrong and evil. Thus, Arjun had to now face his fears and his people all at once and not just face them, but fight them as well.

After Arjun had looked up to see his grandfather Bheeshma Pitamah and his Guru, Guru Dronacharya in the battle, he looked beyond that and saw his hundred brothers with whom he grew up and considered them a family. He understood that this battlefield is a place where whatever you do, you will never be able to escape from the evils of your mind and someone else’s mind.

Arjun saw that apart from his brothers and his grandfather and his teacher, there was Bhoorishrava, the brother of his father and thus, a father figure for Arjun and the Pandavas. Arjun could not ever think of fighting Bhoorishrava, whom he had always considered a very good source of inspiration and he had looked up to him for anything in life because he knew that his father Pandu was a great ruler but Bhoorishrava was a great family man.

Beyond Bhoorishrava, Arjun could see another brother of his father who was also like a father figures to him. He could not understand why he had to see through this and he hated that he had to be a part of the same.

Alongside Bheeshm was Somdutt, another person Arjun looked up to and there was no reason Arjun wanted to fight Bheeshm or Somdutt, even when he knew they somehow loved Duryodhan, he did not know why they hated Pandavas this much that they had to be against the Pandavas to this extent that they were ready to die supporting wrong but not support the right.

Alongside Guru Dronacharya, Archarya, and Chiranjeevi Kripacharya was standing ready for war. Arjun knew that Kripacharya was a very decorated war teacher and he was one of the seven Chirajeevis also. He did not understand why his people and that too such a learned person who had been teaching warfare for so long was against the right people and was supporting the wrong people.

Arjun also saw that to add to his list of people standing against him, there were four names, Purujit, Kuntibhohj, Shalya, and Shakuni, the four brothers of his mother. These four brothers gave him equal love as a father and also as a brother. Arjun never had felt separated or hated while with them all these years and suddenly they too were against his army. These four names were not what Arjun had wanted to be against him and it pained him even if he didn’t say it then. Arjun knew he wanted to see the battlefield from the main point of view and now when he was there, rather than expressing emotions at every step of the way, he will have to first take note of everything because even if hurt, he still was a fighter.

Arjun now looked at his side and saw that his brothers and their family were standing and they too were facing the same thing because they too were seeing their family members right in front of them and they were also experiencing the same state of confusion when they were about to break into war anytime.

He saw that all his Pandava brothers are standing around him. He could see the sons of all the Pandava brothers standing around him. He knew that not just his grandfather was against him, he too was a grandfather to some and he was standing on a war front where he was compromising the lives of his loved ones, who were supporting him to get to what he wanted the most.

Arjun knew that the end was near, but seeing the end in the shape of his family’s end was devastating for him and he had no idea what to do and how to bring things under control because there was nothing that was looking like a happy ending for him.

Conclusion

War is never a happy ending. Either you win completely or you lose completely. If you lose, you lose everything and there is nothing more you can do, sometimes not even live to see the end of the loss. But if you win, you win at the cost of a lot of people and these are the people who had supported you, stood with you, and dared to handle you when you were at your lowest so that they could be there with you at your best but when you win, these are the only people not with you at your best. So, if possible, avoid war. It is never the only option and it is never the happy option for anyone because the bad name it brings is irreparable.

That’s all for Shlok-26 Chapter 1. We will see you tomorrow in Shlok 27 Chapter 1. Till then catch up till Sholk 25 Chapter 1 here.
