Story of Skandamata:

Skandamata literally means Mother of Skand. Skand is Lord Skand, also called Lord Kartikeya and Mata means Mother. Lord Kartikeya was named Skand because he was a very good war strategist and executioner. So he was called the God of War power. Goddess Skandamata is called the mother to Lord Skanda, or Lord Kartikeya, as Goddess Parvati was an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Goddess Parvati is the wife of Lord Shiva and Lord Kartikeya is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Also, Goddess Durga was created as a Shakti Swaroop by Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma. So, technically Goddess Skandamata is the mother of Lord Kartikeya, as Goddess Skandamata is an incarnation of Lord Durga, which is an equivalent position of her to Goddess Parvati. Also, Lord Kartikeya learned the art of war from the Skandamata incarnation of Goddess Durga and thus, she was the one who gave birth to Lord Kartikeya as Lord Skanda or the one expert with war strategies and execution methodologies.

Goddess Skandamata is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri. Due to her fierce style and fearless attitude, her appearance portrays her four hands. One hand rides her lion, the second hand holds out lotus, the third hand is held out in a boon position to grant all the wishes and the fourth hand is to hold Shankh. She rides a lion and sits on a lotus. She holds her son Lord Skanda in her lap, due to which it is said that worshipping Goddess Skandamata will bless the devotee twice.
