Mata Bramhacharini Pooja: Importance, History and Benefits
Day 2 of Navratri is celebrated with immense happiness and devotion. It is Mata Bramhacharini's day. It is just one day after a devil named Tarkasur was killed by Goddess Durga while she was chasing Mahishsura. Goddess Durga entered Parvati and killed Tarakasur to free the Earth of someone who could take the form of a devil and hides behind innocent beings to disturb their habitat. Read the story of Tarkasur here.
Story of Bramhacharini:
Bramhacharini means the woman who pursues Vedic education. The word Bramha means one who follows early traditional rules and Aacharan means one who follows. Goddess Parvati wanted to marry Lord Shiva. She was told that this will take a Tapasya of 5000 years. So Parvati set on the journey of hardship after taking Vedic education by living in mountains and leaving behind all her worldly desires. This form of Parvati gave her the name Mata Bramhacharini. She started following the most trivial method of Tapasya wherein she gave up on everything that could give her desire and pleasure. She started by giving up on daily meals first. Then she left having any kind of meal. Slowly, she left fruits and raw vegetables she was having during her small breaks. She also was able to give up on the one fruit she ate once in two days. Lastly, she gave up on the leaves of edible trees. This was when she was called Aparna (one who lives without leaves. Parna means leaf in Sanskrit and adding A as a predecessor of a word negates the same, so Aparna means without leaves). Meanwhile, Lord Shiva showed no interest in marriage and was not happy about people and Gods pressurizing him. So, all the Gods went to Lord Kamadeva (the God of love interest and attractive desires) to awaken Lord Shiva from his slumber and marry Parvati. The reason cited was that Lord Shiva’s son could only kill a devil who created havoc due to his powers and wit. We all know Lord Ganesha was needed to handle witty evils as he holds maximum knowledge of the universe, even more than Lord Brahma, who taught Lord Ganesha everything about the Vedas. Lord Kamadeva shot an arrow of desire at Lord Shiva and this convinced him to find a girl equally suitable for being his wife. He (Lord Shiva), then learned about Parvati and went to meet her in disguise to know if her prayers were real. He tried disturbing Bramhacharini and discouraging her from the Tapasya using his charm. He even took multiple forms that could blend in with the environment in which Parvati was praying and tried to create disturbances for her worship. Parvati paid a deaf ear to all the distractions and continued to worship. Lord Shiva was impressed with this and felt attracted to Parvati’s Bramhacharini Swaroop and got married to her.
Thus, Mata Bramhacharini told everyone that whoever worships her on the second day of Navratri will receive the most serious resolution of their lives, if followed seriously and passionately.
