English Translation
We don’t even know what is better for us, we will win or lose. The sones of Dhritrashtra are arrayed before us. Even if we kill them, we shall not wish to live.
Meaning
In the previous Shlok, we saw how Arjun tried to tell Shri Krishna that he did not want his family to suffer so he thought that if he does not fight, the people will not fight and thus, everyone will be alive. However after that, he will have to beg and live a life of poverty, but at least his people will be alive and he will be sin free and he will not own the blood money, that he will get after he kills the people.
In this Shlok, Arjun will open up about his actual insecurity about him being unsure of war and not of killing. He says that he is unable to decide if it is good for him to go to war or not because he is very confused and he does not know why Shri Krishna was thinking going to war was right.
Arjun also says that when he tried to think from Shri Krishna’s perspective, he did not get any idea why he said what he said and thus, he is getting more and more confused rather than being straight-up decisive.
Killing elders is a crime in Arjun’s thoughts and killing them in this situation is not a crime was Shri Krishna’s idea and there was nothing that Arjun could understand to justify the entire thing, so he kept pondering.
Arjun also mentioned that he doesn’t know if there will be a war, or who will win. Will the Pandavas win and be able to establish the fact that truth and honesty prevail over bad and dishonesty always? Also, Arjun mentioned that if the Kauravas win, they will establish that they were right, and their dishonesty might look bad, but it has more power and it will win. So anything was not confirmed and there was no guarantee of anything. Upon that, Arjun had no logic behind the reason why people were doing what they were doing. So he said that he was very confused.
Arjun said that he cannot see the future but he knows that Shri Krishna is Trikaaldarshi and he can see everything so he wanted an approximate prediction of what will happen so that he can decide if he wanted to fight or not.
He also said that he has no desire of killing his people and his family to live and be invincible like that. He does not desire any kingdom, money, or fame in this war. He wanted to establish a belief and now he is not willing to do that also. So, he wasn’t willing to live if his family was dead so he wasn’t motivated to fight.
I am not interested in killing people and then living. The ones who want to do this are standing in front of us and yet I don’t want to kill them now. So why should I fight? Maybe my desire to fight and my capability to fight is settled as my hate has after seeing them thus there is no point in fighting anymore when there is no more hatred for me for them, even if they have some for us.
Conclusion
Arjun believed that if there is enough hatred on one side and the other side could live without the same, there was no need for a fight because more than fighting, there was the need for peaceful living and if the sacrifice of one can lead to the happiness of a lot of people then that sacrifice is worth it and someone has to make that sacrifice. Since Duryodhan was in no mood for one, so even if Arjun didn’t feel very happy, he was okay with the same.
