Na Kaandkshe Vijayam Krishna Na Cha Rajyam Sukhaani Cha | Kim No Raajyen Govind Kim Bhogairjeeviten Wa || 1-32 ||

Hindi Translation

Hey Krishna, mujhe Rajya nahi chahiye, mujhe jeet bhi nahi chahiye, main rajya ka kya karoonga, main sukh ka kya karoonga, mujhe jeene ka kya hi fayda?

English Translation

O Krishna, I am not interested in getting a kingdom, I no longer desire victory. What will I do with Kingdom and happiness (when I am internally unhappy), what is even the purpose of my living?

Meaning

In the previous Shlok, we saw how Arjun was devastated by thinking that he will have to fight the war against his own people and thus he was counting on that not just himself, but nature is also not giving good signs for the war, so they should not fight and let things be as they were.

Arjun further continued with the same saying to Shri Krishna that since the time the Pandavas had left for the woods and they had renounced the kingdom and everything that came with it, initially, it was very difficult for them but slowly they had learned to stay in limited resources and zero facilities and they were not anymore interested in anything such.

The Pandavas were so frustrated with living in a template and when they moved out, they actually realized what peace, happiness, and satisfaction felt like so they were ready to spend their entire lives like that only. The only reason they came out of the woods in the capital area again was that they had promised their subjects that they will show their faces if they are alive after exile and also try to get things under control as Dharmatmas and not like the Kauravas were doing with Adharma, but they were perfectly fine to spend more of their time like the commoners in the woods and they do not want this bloodshed.

So Arjun was telling Shri Krishna that he was okay with nothing at his disposal. He did not want to live like a king anymore. He wanted to serve the public. He wanted to heal the needy. He wanted to be around normal people normally and not like royals.

Arjun knew that if the war happens, the Pandavas will win it. But Arjun also knew that he will be alone and will win because there will be no one to be with. He will win alone. He will be killing his own people to win the war and when these own people will be no more, then his victory is also useless.

Along with this, Arjun was also concerned that he didn’t care about anything but only his people’s safety. There were a lot of things that Arjun wanted but he never desired to live in luxury or live aloof of the commoners. He said that even if he wins the war, he will not feel like enjoying anything won because it will belong to someone in his family that he had snatched from him.

Arjun was frustrated and was also tired of fighting and thus, he said that he was anyways a minimalist and he didn’t need a lot of things in his life. He said that he was okay with something very basic and that even if he wins the war, he doesn't want to fight, he is not going to use anything he wins and thus he wasn’t happy at getting what he thought was the end product. Thus, Arjun decided that he was okay without the war and he didn’t want anything else than peace.

Arjun said that even if he was given everything on earth and the entire universe and also everything from all the universes of all the three worlds (heaven, earth, nether), he wouldn’t be happy in it because he had learned to love with nothing but the minimum resources and thus, he was away from the desires of wanting an needing more.

When he was ready to renounce all the happiness and luxuries of all the three worlds, then he was not happy to fight for a comparatively small piece of land on Earth for which this much bloodshed will all go in vain as Arjun or the Pandavas are not going to use any of it.

Basically, Arjun tried to prove that the entire war scene was a figment of the illusion of happily ever after and thus, he just wanted to escape from it because he had realized that the real joy was to be with his God, Shri Krishna, and the real happiness was in being as close to God as possible and luxury pulls you away from God in all regards.

Conclusion

Arjun knew that he was done fighting his own people because even if he tried to, he was going away from the real definition of peace and he hated how things have become in the first place and thus, he was not keen on being anything he wanted in the first place now. Arjun was sure that he didn’t want the war, the outcome of the war, and the condition where he had to keep justifying his situation to everyone and keep repenting every second of his breath that he had to kill his own people to deserve what he had. This is a cycle of self-loathing and repentance that is very difficult to break and resolve, thus, Arjun wanted to make sure that whatever happens, he is not in the vicious cycle of violence and repentance again and again.

That’s it for Shlok-32, Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta. See you tomorrow with Shlok-33, Chapter-1. Till then read Shlok-31 here if not already.
