English Translation
Sanjaya said hey Dhritrashtra, after the winner oversleep and the one with curly hair, Arjun said this to Hrishikesh and Shri Krishna, he added, I will not fight, and then he fell completely silent.
Meaning
In the previous Shlok, we saw how Arjun was having withdrawal symptoms by thinking about losing his people so even if he wanted guidance from Shri Krishna, he wasn’t deterred from his stubbornness of not fighting a war. He was adamant that he will not fight because what he wanted was no more needed and thus, he was no more interested in war also. He did not understand that even if he denies to fight, the war will happen and then, it will not be as he wanted. It will be brutal, more than it would be with him in the war, and there will be no looking back in either case.
Shri Krishna also knew that Arjun was not in the best mind frame and thus any sarcasm and any scolding will not work upon him. He needs to understand things, like a small innocent child and there needs to be a proper mature conversation to make Arjun believe in the need for this war.
Arjun had concluded that he will gain a kingdom after he wins the war, but he did not want the kingdom, especially the one that he will gain after killing his brothers and making his family also kill their family members who oppose them and the Pandavas for the end goal of winning the war, avenging the bad and enjoying a happy life. So, Arjun didn’t want any property and he didn’t want to fight.
The next thing Arjun deduced that he will gain after winning the battle will be money and wealth. But this also will be blood money and wealth gained after tens of thousands of people lose their lives to gain it or prevent it and it will be blood money, which will only carry the stories of pain and guilt and mistakes and sins and sacrifices written all over it. So Arjun did not want that also.
Next up was fame and popularity for Arjun and the Pandavas in general because they have defeated the invincibles and now, they will remove all the beads of the universe. But Arjun knew that this was not possible because in order to remove the bad, he will become bad himself and he will become what he hated about the Kauravas. If not, then he will not be able to justice the people’s expectations because there always be one person to hate something and slowly, escalate things to another Mahabharata and this is a vicious cycle of a never-ending format. Thus he renounced fame and popularity also.
Alongside these, Arjun was also ready to give up one more thing, his position. If he wins the war, he will be the kingmaker and thus, the Kingman, with Yudhishthir, the eldest son being the throne holder. Arjun will not have the empire, he will not have money, he will not have people, no fame, and popularity, so no position or designation also. He will be in the ocean of unknowns with everything trying to take over his peace of mind and will to live, every day, every hour, every minute, every passing second.
Yet Arjun knew he wasn’t any more interested in anything and he had accepted the fact that he will be deprived of every happiness and yet he will be happy.
But Arjun knew he will not deal with the imbalance of mental peace and happiness. He will have the satisfaction of not doing the wrong thing. He will have the family alive, even if they wouldn’t be for him then, but at least they will be there and then Arjun might try to get them to improve. But if they are dead, there would only be If’s and But thinking about maybe things could have been better.
Now, Arjun was sure that if he wins, he will have everything and he will not be happy. If he losses, he will have nothing and he will not be happy. But if he does not fight, he will not have anything but he will be happy. So he had finally decided. He specified in clear and very direct terms, “I Will Not Fight.” He was not open to debate upon this because he knew he was right, even if Shri Krishna didn’t think so and he wouldn’t even let this hold. Still, Arjun announced that he will not fight, come what may.
Conclusion
Arjun was in the confusion about What If and Maybes and suddenly, he knew he was spectacularly clear that he did not want to have that, what he thought he wanted earlier. So he was no more in the zone of desiring and repenting and thus, he was in the best shoes to declare that to each one, their own but he will not fight under any circumstances because it was time he took a stand for himself.
