Hindi Translation

Kaayarta roop dosh se tiraskrit Swabhaav wala or dharma ke vishay me mohit antah karan wala main aapse poochta hun ki jo nishchit kalyaan karne wali ho, wah baat mere liye kahiye. Main aapka shishya hoon. Aapke Sharan hue mujhe shiksha dijiye.

English Translation

My deepest nature has been stricken by the error of compassion. With a mind confused about the law, I ask you what would be the best. Tell me this for sure. I am your student. Teach me as I seek refuge in you.

Meaning

In the previous Shlok, we saw how Arjun stated that he wasn’t sure about anything in the war, who will win, who will lose, and who is right or wrong anymore. Thus, he wasn’t interested in fighting and he will sacrifice the desire to establish truth and triumph that saves his family from dying.

In this Shlok, he will seek a place in Shri Krishna’s guidance and surrender to his wisdom and advice because he was done using his brain and then second-guessing and debating the same over and over again.

Arjun believed that fighting a war to win it and not focussing upon anything else was a warrior spirit until it hurts your people and the money that happens, fighting is not the greatest of options and even if surrendering would make him look weak, he considered that not an act of cowardice, but of strength to leave something he desired for the betterment of the maxim people even if it makes him suffer more than ever.

But Shri Krishna was of the total opposite opinion and he did not agree to anything that Arjun felt or believed because he knew he was right and he had a point in saying that the war was mandatory and there was no other way to establish a lot of things, one of them being the order of the universe and the other being the age factor whereby everyone had a specific age and they had lived enough to make an impact.

Now Arjun was thinking if actually, he was a coward because Shri Krishna never speaks without substance and his continuously rebelling against the same and Shri Krishna’s one or two-liners each time just to say that he needs to change his approach was making Arjun troubled and he wasn’t anymore in his proper mindshare. Arjun knew he was not one of those people who run away from a situation and yet he was doing so from here so there has to be a reason why he would do this.

So Arjun says to Shri Krishna that I don’t agree that I am a coward but if you say so, maybe I am a coward and maybe I am stupid also because I cannot decipher what you want to say. So if you can help me think because I am not able to think, I’ll be glad.

At the beginning of the chapter only, Shri Krishna told Arjun to stop sitting in pain and sadness and stand up for the war. This clearly stated that Shri Krishna strictly supported the war. Arjun was only confused because one side was his attachment to the family and the ethics of not killing the elders but on the other side was his warrior promise to make everything right of his people even if he suffers in the process but the truth should prevail.

So he asks Shri Krishna what he should do and what is the exact path he needs to necessarily follow.

Shri Krishna had already told Arjun that he was playing a coward and due to that he wasn’t in the right state of mind to understand the fact that he was not right, he was just delaying the right from happening, but Now when Arjun asked again that he was confused and he needs help and guidance, then Shri Krishna was to tell him what all will make things better in the long term even if there had to be a lot of suffering to a lot of people in the short term.

Arjun requested Shri Krishna to not see him as his chariot leader or the battle leader but as his student and then give the knowledge about what was happening and what did he miss to be in this position, so confused and so disturbed. Arjun was genuinely interested in getting a detailed understanding because he did not want to be the weak link in any format.

This did not mean that Arjun was not prepped for fighting. He just wanted to know why there was a disparity between him and Shri Krishna’s thoughts and how can they be on the same pedestal before they make a decision mutually.

Conclusion

Arjun first talks about Dharma and he was confused. Then he talked about benefits and his duties. In the third tone, he talked about gaining knowledge so, he talked as a student. On the fourth side, he talks about being a surrender so that he finally starts learning after being decisive and then indecisive. So, Arjun wanted to explore the actual reason why he wasn’t in his true warrior form and how he can do his best to suit his image.

That’s it for Shlok-07, Chapter-2 of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta. We’ll be back tomorrow with Shlok-08, Chapter-2. Till then, catch up till Shlok-06 and enjoy reading.
