English Translation
If the sons of Dhritrashtra, weapons in hand, were to kill me in battle, unresisting and unarmed, that would be better for me.
Meaning
In the previous Shloka, we saw how Arjun decided against fighting the battle knowing well that any such thing is merely a showfront because he will most likely win the battle. Even if he was a little overconfident in his fighting skills, he was underconfident about the fact of how will everything unfold when the families fight within themselves and what mass destruction it will lead to for ages to recover.
Thus Arjun decides that even if Duryodhan was a bad person and the entire Kaurava army had always been bad and wrong, there was only one thing possible. Arjun decided that if he cannot stop the battle from happening, then he will not fight and sit idle, without his equipment and if the sons of Dhritrashtra decide to fight it out, they will have to mandatorily kill an unarmed and unwilling Arjun to proceed to war.
Arjun decided that he will not retaliate against the blows thrown at him and even if this was against the war tactics to attack anyone with guards down or attacking anyone when they are unarmed, Arjun knew that if the Kauravas find a way around him, then ready for battle or not, they will kill him. But if Arjun retaliates, Arjun will definitely kill them. He knew he had to take that chance and thus, he went for the fact that if the battle has to happen, it will happen with Adharma at the Kauravas end and Arjun will not bat an eye when he is getting killed.
In Arjun’s defense, Arjun was aware of the final list of the Kauravas camp and even if he didn’t know about Guru Dron and Bhishma Pitamah joining the Kauravas, he knew for sure that there will be elders and teachers like Kripacharya and others. He also knew that he was raging in revenge and anger and he had pledged to teach every Kurava a lesson, which was a sin that he had committed because he swore to kill his elders, and this thought in itself is derogatory and disgraceful, as well as sinful.
A thing to note here is that Arjun is facing excessive emotions and guilt of doing something he wasn’t sure he wanted to do but yet he wanted to do. He was very delusional about everything he was doing, seeing, saying, and talking, and thus, Shri Krishna let him speak for a longer time without cutting him in between to know everything that he is feeling and then be able to give him exactly what he feels will be the best way to convince Arjun and tell him that he might be facing the aftermaths of his sins, but he also needed to show the Kauravas the aftermaths of their sins.
Arjun had the best understanding of the fact that the Kauravas had enough of their ways and he was the one who had convinced Shri Krishna to take a proposal for settlement or war for a final decision because he was tired of the routine tussle between the parties leading to a war-like situation each time.
Thus, Arjun backing out from his own proposal was like a person revolting against to own promises and that again is not the warrior habit so, Arjun had to make sure that he stood by the promise he made and make the destined action possible before Shri Krishna had to otherwise pull out an apocalypse to make things possible.
We will see ahead how Shri Krishna tells and convinces Arjun that everyone who will be dying in this war will die because their age was written to be limited if they wouldn’t die, new offspring will not be born and there is a huge theory behind why the destined dead need to die.
Shri Krishna knew that there were a lot of sins, done by a lot of people to which the answer was their death. Now he had to tell Arjun that if he did not become the agent of delivering destiny to the destined, then also there are other people who will do it. Arjun still needs to do it because if he defies his destiny, then things that he feels are good and okay and will be better will only become worse and the entire cause of blame will fall upon Arjun.
Conclusion
It is very easy to know what you can do and what you can save for short-term happiness or betterment, but there is a lot that needs to be done for a long-term commitment and that is only possible if you grab the first most obvious hint of destiny throws at you and then execute it properly without uselessly rebelling against it so that everything that has been defined in a particular manner can get to its final output.
That’s it for Shlok-46, Chapter-1 of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta. We’ll see you again tomorrow in Shlok-47, Chapter-1. Till then, catch up till Shlok-45, Chapter-1 here.
