Hindi Translation
Us waqt Arjun bole, Hey Shri Krishna, Ye Yudh ke maidaan me dono senaon ke beech me rath daal kar hum sab khade hain.
English Translation
Arjun said to Shri Krishna, Hey Lord, we are standing in this field of war with our chariots all in one place between the two armies.
Meaning
In the previous Shlok, we saw how the Pandavas were ready to fight and after all the trumpets, drums, shells, and conches were blown, Arjun picked up his Gaandiv bow and arrow and was ready to start the battle. We saw how the entire Pandava army was adamant to make Truth win and how the entire Kaurava army was pumped to win at any cost.
Arjun was having a feeling that even though there was going to be a war and it is for the better, he felt as if there can be something yet that can avoid the massive rampant destruction. Also, Arjun was leading the war so he had to be double sure that anything that he did was in favor of his objective and not his individual ego siding with the decisions. Thus, he halted for some time and then turned to Shri Krishna for some gyaan and some knowledge so that there is no stone left unturned in terms of justice and ethics.
Arjun said to Lord Krishna that he was the Hrishikesh, not the one whose heart was at the Kesh (top) of anything and he knew everything that was going on in anyone’s heart. Basically, Lord Krishna was the person who was Antaryaami, who knew everything that how things will happen in the future, how things are happening in the present and where and by whom as well as how things have happened in the past and by whom.
Even when the Pandavas had bet their wife Draupadi to the game of Chausar, Lord Krishna knew this situation will arrive. When the Pandavas had lost Draupadi to the Kauravas and Duryodhan attempted a malicious act of trying to rape the respected Draupadi forcefully by pulling and ripping apart her clothes, Draupadi remembered Lord Krishna, as all her husbands were standing like idols, speechless, motionless, actionless because of what they did.
Lord Krishna made sure to keep increasing the length of the saree so that Duryodhan realizes what he was doing and the act can be avoided. Lord Krishna waited for a long time so that both parties do as much crime as they can over materialistic things so that they can be punished and everyone can learn from an example of what had happened.
Lord Krishna also knew that when there will be a peace petition sent to Duryodhan, he will insult everyone related to the Pandavas and will make a useless attempt at capturing the petitioner, Lord Krishna due to which he will be cursed to lose something important in the battle.
Shri Krishna also knew that after this, Duryodhan and Yudhishthir will come to him for help in making the army and what decision will each person make. He even knew that Durryodhan will sit near his head and Yudhishthir will sit near his legs.
He knew that the Kauravas will try to convince Guru Dronacharya and Bheeshma Pitamah and they will be able to do that successfully as well. He was aware of the situation that will happen to the Kauravas the moment the conch shells and trumpets of the Pandavas will be blown.
This was why Arjun asked him before he made any other move a question that was troubling him. But before asking that question, he made a reference saying that between the army of two sets of brothers, you and I are standing with our chariots, separating a thin line of ethics and justice and controlled by power and authority call of starting the battle.
Arjun basically wanted to know if the decision to the war was a good decision or not and if not, then what would be the good decision and if there was anything still that could be done to either stop the war or minimize the problems to the maximum possible extent.
Although Sanjaya was giving the live feed of the battlefield from his place to Dhritrashtra in the palace in Hastinapur, he mentioned that it was the first time since Arjun spoke up directly to Shri Krishna because he knew that if there was anything that could be a miracle or equivalent to one, it could be Shri Krishna with something that can still handle the situation in the best possible manner.
Arjun wanted to say that we can very clearly see each other as the armies were exactly at a distance where just at the throw of an arrow the other army can be reached. Still is there anything that can be done?
If not, are there any last words of wisdom before officially someone loses their life to establish the common objective and before officially kicking in the battle with any action?
Conclusion
Arjun knew that this was a point of no return once the people raise their hands at the other person and then there will only be destruction everywhere. So he just wanted to know one last time if this small distance can also be a point of return and if not, anything that can reduce the possible destruction so that innocents do not suffer at the hands of the powerful ever again. Lord Krishna will give a mind-boggling answer to this and we shall unveil that in our upcoming Shlokas.
Till then, this was all for Shlok-21, Chapter-1. We shall see you tomorrow in Shlok-22, Chapter-1 tomorrow. If till then you have missed Shlok-20, Chapter-1, check it out here.
